It’s followed at 10.30pm by The Rape Debate, in which Jackie Long chairs a discussion with politicians, police, prosecutors, campaigners and survivors. With rape convictions falling to a new low, cameras follow police officers at Avon and Somerset Constabulary through four sexual assault investigations and examine the challenges in securing a conviction. This three-part crime drama (as is currently the norm on ITV) runs over consecutive nights. Whelan’s DS Sarah Collins is called to a London tower block, at the bottom of which lie the bodies of a long-serving police officer and a 15-year-old girl.
And if that sounds a tad like Line of Duty’s AC-12 then perhaps it’s not entirely coincidental. Gemma Whelan, an actor who has played put-upon characters in Upstart Crow and Killing Eve, gets to exert some authority as a member of the Directorate of Special Investigations – a fictional unit that oversees the police.
