This night's most meditative offering was for 2017 neo-Western Wind River, with more plaintive violin and a haunting contribution from Opera Australia soprano Julia Lea Goodwin, in a memorable exchange with a fervently whispering Cave. The Dirty Three frontman is no conventional musician – at one point the big screens showed a close-up of his music stand, and his score listed chords one after another rather than notes on staves – but he has an innate ability to wring emotion from every heave of his bow.Ĭave and Ellis' compositions were brought to life by the imagery. However Warren Ellis's violin came into its own here, delivering a wistful undercurrent that in its soaring lines crossed over in to hope. The Road continued this night's cinematic theme of isolated men doing terrible things to each other, the film of Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic tale getting moments of terrifying musical dissonance to match. The Proposition, a 2005 bushranger bloodbath for which Cave also wrote the screenplay, was a great place to start this evening as it featured the most of Cave's singing voice, which at 62 is as commanding and foreboding as ever.Ībrasive strings and thudding tympani added to the violent and desolate atmosphere on screen, until sweet relief in the contrast of The Rider Song, which tonight contained all the majestic sweep of an Elmer Bernstein western score.

The pair were onstage at the Sydney Opera House for a retrospective of their soundtrack work on Sunday, and their bonds to each other and to this heart-wrenching body of work made for a stage presence so dynamic, one sometimes forgot that the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Sydney Philharmonia Chorus and projected visuals of the six films featured were up there with them. Rock stars aren't in the habit of staying in the background, and the film music made by Nick Cave and his Bad Seed collaborator Warren Ellis over the past 15 years is no exception.
